What You Need To Know

Pre-register to Vote: Many states allow 16- or 17-year-olds to pre-register so they are ready to vote when they turn 18.
Educate and Encourage Others: Teens can help friends and family register, find trusted information, and discuss election issues.
Volunteer: Teens can volunteer for political campaigns, participate in voter registration drives, or work at polling places (in some states at ages 16 or 17).
Advocacy: Contact representatives about issues that matter, create and share media about elections, and initiate civic projects at school or in the community.
Engage in Mock Elections: Participate in or organize mock elections to learn how voting works and why it matters.
Model Civic Responsibility: Learn about voting procedures, accompany adults to the polls, and develop habits of informed, active citizenship.

Promote Respect and Belonging: Take pride in your school and community. Participate in clean-up or beautification projects and encourage respect for public and private spaces among friends.
Speak Up: If you witness vandalism, report it to a trusted adult, teacher, or law enforcement. Silent witnesses make the problem worse.
Help Educate: Share information with peers about the real consequences of vandalism. Sometimes people don’t realize the harm until it’s explained.
Volunteer or Advocate: Join youth groups, after-school programs, or neighborhood associations dedicated to improving your community and preventing crime.
Channel Expression Constructively: Support programs like mural projects or graffiti art walls where creativity is encouraged legally and positively.
Encourage Positive Peer Leadership: Be a good role model and encourage peers to make positive choices; mentor younger students or organize anti-vandalism campaigns.

Respect Boundaries: Avoid entering private property, construction sites, or marked “No Trespassing” areas without permission.
Educate Peers: Talk with friends about why respecting others’ property matters, and dispel myths that trespassing is “harmless fun.”
Lead by Example: Demonstrate good behavior in respecting all property lines, whether at school, in parks, or neighborhoods.
Report Serious Issues: If you see someone trespassing in a way that could cause harm, alert a trusted adult or community authority.

Don’t Shoplift: Understand that short-term gains aren't worth long-term consequences.
Educate Friends: Talk to peers about the real legal and life consequences of stealing, and help dispel the myth that shoplifting is harmless or common “teenager stuff.”
Stand Up: If you see shoplifting or feel peer pressure, choose the right path and distance yourself from risky situations.
Report if Necessary: Alert store staff or a trusted adult if you witness shoplifting. Reporting crime contributes to safer communities.
Promote Integrity: Get involved in creating a positive school or local environment—volunteer, organize anti-theft campaigns, or support fairness and honesty.
Channel Energy Positively: If the urge comes from boredom, excitement-seeking, or other stresses, find constructive outlets like sports, art, or helping others.

Know and Respect Boundaries: Understand consent, and always respect personal boundaries.
Seek Information: Learn about what constitutes a sex offense, including what is and isn’t legal at your age. Ignorance is not a defense.
Speak Up and Report: If you see, experience, or are told about sex offenses, report them to a trusted adult, law enforcement, or support service. Silence enables harm.
Model Healthy Relationships: Promote respectful, mutually agreed-upon interactions in friendships and dating. Don’t tolerate pressure, threats, or coercion.
Use Technology Responsibly: Be aware that sharing explicit images or messages, even consensually among teens, can carry serious legal risks.
Get Help If Needed: If you or someone you know may be struggling with boundaries, peer pressure, or unwanted attention, reach out to school counselors or trusted adults.

Never Impersonate: Understand that pretending to be a police officer, even as a joke, is a serious crime with lasting consequences.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you see someone falsely claiming to be a police officer, report it to a trusted adult or law enforcement immediately.
Promote Awareness: Help spread knowledge about the legal and social harms of impersonating officers in your school or community.
Respect Authority: Encourage responsible behavior and respect for real law enforcement officials who work to keep communities safe.

Respect Others’ IP: Avoid copying or using copyrighted material, trademarks, or inventions without permission. This includes music, videos, software, images, and written work.
Understand IP Basics: Learn about the different types of intellectual property and why they matter, which can help you in school projects, creativity, or future business.
Create Original Work: If you design, write, or invent something, recognize that your creations can be protected, giving you control over how others use them.
Give Credit: When using others’ work for school or hobbies, always cite or ask for permission to avoid infringement.
Report Infringement: If you see unauthorized use of someone’s IP, inform a trusted adult or the rights holder.
Consider Future IP Protection: If you invent or create something valuable, learn how to protect your rights, for example by applying for trademarks or copyrights with adult help.

Meet Age and Testing Requirements: Wait until you are old enough and pass all required tests for a permit and license.
Follow Permit Rules: Always drive with a qualified adult during the learner’s permit phase, staying off highways if under 16.
Complete Required Practice: Log supervised driving hours, including night driving, to gain experience.

Assess Your Readiness: Make sure you are financially self-sufficient and emotionally mature to handle the responsibility.
Gather Required Evidence: Collect proof of independent living, or reasons why emancipation is necessary (e.g., unsafe living conditions), or get parental consent if possible.
File a Petition: Submit your petition for emancipation to the court and attend any required hearings.
Seek Legal Advice: Consider consulting a family law attorney to fully understand your rights and responsibilities.
Plan for the Future: Be prepared to manage your own housing, healthcare, education, and finances responsibly.
